FRUCOM, together with representatives from its member Aegean Exporters Association and the Permanent Delegation of Türkiye to the EU, had an in-person meeting at DG SANTE on 17 October. The Commission was represented by Tim Gumbel, Frans Verstraete, Ingus Celms and Jan Bloemendal.
This follows a similar meeting last year.
The Turkish delegation explained its measures to monitor and prevent contamination, and practical limitations. This included technical support and funding to the operators, industry strategies and best practices, as well as investments in new machinery and scientific research.
The Commission welcomed the initiative. It explained its approach to monitoring data: they also look at the context as detailed above. Positive assessment on a specific commodity is not representative of the entire commodity list for a specific country, but is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
