The European Commission has established a new expert group titled the European Board on Agriculture and Food (EBAF) on 24 January. It will be primarily tasked with:
·providing high-level advice to the Commission on strategic policy developments for the Vision for agriculture and food to be presented within the first 100 days of the mandate, and other policy initiatives, and
·advising the Commission in the preparation of policy initiatives in the fields of the future of agriculture and food and to follow-up on the recommendations of the final report of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture.
The first meeting of the EBAF will take place on 4 February 2025 (download the Agenda), and it’s membership is constituted of 30 representatives of organisations in the farming community, other actors of the food supply chain, and civil society including in areas such as environment and climate, animal welfare or consumer issues.
It will be recalled that FRUCOM was invited to provide contributions to the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture, which was the central pillar of the response by the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, to an upswell in farmer discontent and protests during 2024.
