European Parliament: DG Trade Director-General Sabine Weyand on the EU-US trade deal

12 SEPTEMBER 2025

On 3 September, the European Parliament’s Committee for International Trade (INTA) held an exchange with the Director General of DG TRADE Sabine Weyand on the EU-US trade deal and the Mercosur and Mexico agreements, which were proposed by the European Commission on the same day.

The overall sentiment of most MEPs was negative in relation to the EU-US trade deal with doubts raised about the legality of the tariff offer to the US being raised, as well as criticism that the deal does not present any gains for the EU and its industries. A small number of MEPs recognised that this deal is one step in a wider process and that the circumstances, though not idea, were better than the alternative. Sabine Weyand for her part noted that MEPs had not been in favour of escalating the conflict with the US, so this trade offer would be the logical conclusion.

Earlier that morning the chair of the INTA Committee, Mr Bernd Lange, held a press conference on EU-US trade, sharing again his criticisms of the deal, and doubts that it would be supported by the European Parliament.
