The European Parliament's ENVI and AGRI committees have adopted a draft report titled ‘On ensuring the faster registration & uptake of biological control agents’.
It requests the Commission to establish a clear legal definition and dedicated regulatory framework for biological control agents (BCAs), aimed at accelerating their registration and market uptake. This would encourage investment, support SMEs innovation and strengthen the EU’s biological control sector. Fast-track authorisation procedures are recommended to ensure quicker access to sustainable alternatives while maintaining high standards of health and environmental protection.
It further calls for amendments to the Pesticides Regulation (1107/2009) to enable Member States to expedite assessments and approvals of applications, to shift toward less harmful methods. To avoid delays, the Commission should assess funding needs for additional EFSA and Commission staff, and for Member States to allocate sufficient resources to their national competent authorities.
The European Parliament is expected to vote on this draft resolution on November 24-27.
