EU Green Deal unveiled

The Commission President unveiled the European Green Deal. According to the Commission, it sets out "how to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, boosting the economy, improving people's health and quality of life, caring for nature, and leaving no one behind".

The detailed farm-to-fork strategy will be made public in spring 2020, to  

  • make sure Europeans get affordable and sustainable food;
  • tackle climate change;
  • increase organic farming

Imported food products from third countries must comply with the EU’s environmental standards, mentions the Commission.

The EU intends to reduce significantly the dependency, risk and use of chemical pesticides, as well as of fertilisers, antibiotics;  achieve more sustainable processing and farm transport; healthy consumption and reduce food loss and waste.

Measures, including legislative, to significantly reduce the use and risk of chemical pesticides, as well as the use of fertilizers and antibiotics are expected by 2021.
